Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma related first aid interventions in the workplace. The course covers the correct use of reliever medication, recognition, risk management, prevention and risk minimisation strategies related to asthma.  Individuals completing this course will be able to apply their skills and knowledge in either the workplace or in the community.

The following units will be included in your certificate:

  • 22702VIC - Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies
  • VU24021 - Provide first aid management of an asthma emergency
  • VU24022 - Manage asthma risks

Online with Face-to-Face assessment - 30 minutes

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID). 
  • It is recommended that students will be best equipped to successfully undertake the training if they have language, literacy and oral communication skills that align to Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Follow clear steps and ask questions if help is needed understanding a process
    • Reading: Read and understand simple health instructions, signs, and emergency plans
    • Writing: Fill in short forms or write notes about a health emergency
    • Oral communication: Speak clearly, listen carefully, and explain what happened in a health situation
    • Numeracy: Use basic numbers to read labels or measure timing in an emergency
    • Digital Literacy: Use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. 

The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face: The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 2.5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions. 

Delivery mode: Refresher: The online component is expected to take approximately 1 hour to complete. This component provides a brief overview of the content that will be covered during the face-to-face session. Please note that these timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to work through the online component. 

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

This certificate has an industry recommended renewal period of 36 months

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include: 

Practical task demonstrations:

  • Performance Task – INFANT: Administer asthma medication using a mask and spacer
  • Simulated Scenario – CHILD: Administer asthma medication (with a spacer) using a Personal Asthma Action Plan
  • Simulated Scenario – ADULT: Administer asthma medication (without a spacer), using the Asthma First Aid Protocol developed by NACA 

Case studies:

  • Case Study 1: Risk Assessment & Emergency Management Strategy (for an individual with asthma-like signs and symptoms, with no previous diagnosis)
  • Case Study 2: Risk Assessment & Emergency Management Strategy (for asthma episodes for an individual diagnosed with asthma)

Documentation – The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

  • Asthma Incident Report Form
  • Asthma Risk Assessment Form
  • Individual Management Plan

Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions. All questions must be completed.

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.
